Girls swim season starts strong, boys look to emulate their success
The swimming season is now in full swing for both the boys and the girls. The girls have gotten off to a torrid start this season, starting 4-0.
There are multiple players who can be considered key factors.
Defending county champion Cassie Freeman has done well to start this year. Her best contribution is to the 100 yard butterfly, but often contributes to other races as well, as coach Courtney Farrell describes her as a “versatile swimmer.” Cassie’s previous season was one to beat, as not only did she win counties, but also placed very high in the Individual State Meet of Champions.
This is a performance that both Farrell and the team would like to see again, as it would undoubtedly aid in the team’s success.
Dani Freeman is another name with potential for the girls this season. The sophomore is contributing to the team so far, as she is filling in the shoes of seniors who graduated last year, on the young team.
Her talents are more focused than Freeman’s as she races in the 50 and 100 freestyle races.
“She has a lot of speed,” said Farrell.
A sleeper is freshman Hailey Marzano. Marzano contributes mostly to the A relays and to the breaststroke.
Another sophomore, Emily Le is also contributing to the girls’ success so far this season. She too is filling the shoes of seniors who graduated last year, and is doing it very well. Her strong suits are the 100 fly, and contributes greatly to the 200 freestyle.
Captain Cassidy Le is also performing well and leading her team so far.
“She is making sure the team bonds and works hard at the same time,” Farrell said.
Cassidy’s strong points are the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
The boys have not enjoyed the same success as the girls as their record sit at 1-3, but with plenty of time in the season, it’s conceivable that boys will turn it around.
Despite the team’s record, there are still strong contributors to their season so far.
Sean Kim has helped the season greatly thus far, and his best races are the 200 I.M. and the 100 yard backstroke.
Another senior, Liam Caruth is having a good season. Caruth is one of the top sprinters in the 50 yard freestyle, and he also is very impressive in the 100 yard freestyle.
Mike Gramegna is another well established sprinter. He contributes to the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, Both Caruth and Gramegna also help out their teams in the relays, using their speed, often to the team’s advantage.
Senior captain Jimmy Spillane is a great leader and. Spillane is one of PV’s strongest swimmers, and is very versatile in the pool, as he often swims in a multitude of races, and seemingly doing well in most, if not all, of them.
Robert Saul graduated in 2019.
