PV senior to continue running career at Hartford

When senior Nurlan Herburger began running six years ago, he had no idea that it would be taking him places, especially not to the University of Hartford’s Division I track and field team.

“I remember I wanted to be a thrower because I somewhat hated running. I decided to run distance so I didn’t have to run fast, and so I could stick in the back,” Herburger recalled. However, with time, Nurlan became one of the best runners on the team. “I didn’t start to enjoy running until my sophomore year, where I learned to embrace it; it’s given me more than I could’ve ever thought.”

Herburger currently holds school records for the 4×1600 (18:47) and the distance medley relay (10:41).

“My motivation for running is never settling. I’ve learned to love this sport and I’ve put my whole heart into it, and I know I’m not the best. I’ve always pushed myself to be better, and that’s what my motivation is: pushing myself and never settling to mediocrity.”

When asked about Herburger, coach John Murtaugh had nothing but positive things to say.

“I have had the distinct pleasure to coach Nurlan in three sports over the course of the last four years,” Murtaugh said. “I have witnessed his mental and physical development over that time. Nurlan has been one of my most dedicated athletes here at Pascack Valley and his passion and dedication for the sport is evident everyday.”

As he heads towards the bigger meets this season, he aspires to become an All-County Athlete. He hopes to move on to State Groups, and quite possibly the State Meet of Champions.

Next year, Herburger will be running for the University of Hartford, where he also aspires to become one of the best runners on the team, while making all conference honors.

“It will be a lot of hard work, but I believe I can fulfill my goals,” he said.

Herburger has been a persistent role model and team motivator,” Murtaugh said. “His departure from the Pascack Valley running community will be truly missed, but not before he finishes some business here at Pascack Valley.”
