Volleyball team won’t let rebuilding get in the way
Check out the state of the team as season begins anew
Head coach: Andrew Lewis (20th Season)
Last year’s record: 18-9, lost in the Group 3 State Semi-Finals
Key returnees: Abby Lee (Sr.), Caitlin Earls (Sr.), Jenna Westley (Sr.), Colette Dabaghian (Sr.), Kat Grammatikos (Sr.), Grace Twomey (Sr.), Alyse Herburger (Jr.), Olivia Leili (Jr.), Julia Dobre (Jr.)
Player Roles:
- Captain outside hitter Abby Lee will be the key offensive threat and is also an excellent all-around player.
- Captain libero Caitlin Earls will anchor the defense. She is an outstanding serve-receiver and defensive leader.
- Setter Jenna Westley will run the offense.
- Middle-hitter/ middle-blocker Colette Dabaghian will need to control the action along the net along with junior middle-hitter/ middle-blocker Alyse Herburger.
- Kat Grammatikos and Grace Twomey are competing for the other outside hitter position.
- Olivia Leili adds a powerful attack and block from the front right side
- Julia Dobre adds serving ability and good back-row defense.
Key losses: The Indians lost the entire starting team last year to graduation.
Strengths of team: The Indians will need to eliminate unforced errors while serving and attacking. Good serve receiving and passing will be necessary so Jenna Westley can run the offense smoothly and distribute the ball to her hitters. The team is working hard and improving every day.
Areas that need improvement: Consistency. The team has performed very well in all of its scrimmages but will need to play at that level at all times.
Outlook: Despite a lack of much varsity experience, PV has a talented group with a lot of club team experience and will be competitive in the difficult Big North National Division.
Coach’s comment: “As I enter my 20th season, I am enjoying this team as much as any team which I have ever coached. The girls are giving their best effort and supporting one another. We have a nice mix of seniors, juniors, sophomores and even some freshmen who are all making contributions to the total team effort.” -Andrew Lewis
First Game: Thursday, September 10th @ Old Tappan 4:15 P.M.
