Weather, Lack of Hitting Dooms Softball Team

Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Old Tappan raises questions

It was not an ideal week for the PV softball team.

Since last Thursday, the team has gone 0-3, dropping tough games to River Dell, Mahwah, and Old Tappan. This brings their record to 6-5 overall on the season. The team also had a game slated for Monday against Ridgewood that was postponed to May 12th due to heavy rain.

A common theme throughout this losing streak has been the lack of hitting collectively among the girls. In those three games, the team has 5, 4, and 6 hits, respectively, while scoring only 4 runs. If they want to compete with the better teams, that needs to change.

Catcher Carly Comito commented on the situation, saying, “These games brought us to the realization that we need to start getting the bats on the ball more. The lack of hitting is concerning for us, considering we’re actually a good hitting team.” She also added that they are working hard to improve their hitting in practice, while preparing for the upcoming games, which are big for them.

However, there is still optimism for the team, considering they still have a winning record and have seen good performances from some of the girls in the losses. For example, Tuesday saw pitcher Alex Pleasic strike out 11 and hold Mahwah scoreless until the seventh inning.

Also, junior Christine Franklin is on a hot streak as of late, as she is batting over .400 on the season and has consistently hit the ball hard. When asked about her current play, she said, “I plan on keeping this streak going as long as I can, especially as more of our bats come alive and come together.”

Another notable performance over the last week comes from senior Caroline Savianeso, who continues to collect hits game after game. She has mastered the act of bunting and seems to get on base almost every time she is up.

Overall, the team still believes in itself and is bound for a recovery. As said by Franklin, “We are a great team and we have worked incredibly hard for this season. It’s far from over and there is no doubt in my mind we can finish strong and go far as long as we stay positive.”

The recent schedule has been rough, but don’t tell this to the Indians. They believe they can compete with anybody. Said Comito, “We want a tough schedule, because that’s how we improve altogether.” Franklin also noted that these games were close, and they were all teams they could have beaten.

With the Bergen County Tournament seedings quickly approaching, its is important for them to win as many games as possible in the upcoming week.

UPCOMING GAMES: Saturday vs. Wood-Ridge, Monday at Bergenfield, and Wednesday at Demarest.
