Students paint windows in downtown Hillsdale
Downtown Hillsdale seems to be getting dressed up, as the holidays are just around the corner.
October 22nd marked the second time that Pascack Valley’s art teachers and students have worked with storeowners in downtown Hillsdale to design a store window. The first time was last year for the winter/holiday season. Store owners were more than happy to welcome back the student designers after the success of last year’s event.
Stephanie DiGiacopo, an art teacher here at PV, worked with John Puccio, PV’s vice principal, and the Hillsdale councilmen to organize the event. DiGiacopo and Miss Christine Steinmetz, another art teacher, brought 32 art students to downtown Hillsdale to paint storefronts for the Halloween/Fall season.
“One of my greatest memories of high school was window painting in our town during the holiday season. As an art teacher, it was a wonderful experience to see our students have an opportunity to use their artistic talent to make their town look special and festive. Students worked hard and approached the day with enthusiasm and pride,” said Steinmetz.
Students were each assigned a store window. In preparation, they worked during lunch periods and after school to have their design ready to go.
They drew their designs on large scrap papers, transferred the design to the window, and then began painting backwards.
By painting black outlines and then adding color, they achieved the intended complete look. Then, in order to make the images more visible, the students backed the entire design with white paint.
