Winter sports preview: Boys basketball
Indians open season tonight at Old Tappan
Head coach: Mr. Al Coleman.
Last year’s record: 15-13
Key losses: Sonny Ray Dominguez, Chris Jackson, Kyle Onderdonk, Ryan Onderdonk, Harrison Milacek, Pat Clancey, Jake Morra.
Key returnees: Colin Dedrick (Jr.-F).
Key newcomers: Eric Ziccarelli (Jr.-G), Jon Piccinich (Jr.-F), Legend Dominguez (So.-G), Kyle McManus (Jr.-G), Matt Vasel (So.-G/F), Matt Domville (So.F/C), Ryan Hynekamp, (Jr.-F), Kevin Smith (So.-C).
Strengths: Youthful exuberance.
Areas that need improvement: Inexperience.
Outlook: It’ll be a tough row to hoe for PV, who lost nearly every player that received significant minutes from last year’s team that qualified for the North 1, Group 3 playoffs (where it knocked off Dwight Morrow in the first round before falling to Jefferson in the quarterfinals). Having just quarterbacked the football team to its state title, PV will lean on Dedrick’s experience and leadership abilities while the rest of its talented but young lineup earns its stripes.
Coach’s comment: “We are young and inexperienced this year, having graduated a number of seniors (eight). We have a great group of young players who are committed to playing as a team and are working hard everyday in practice to get better through fundamental development.”
