Winter Sports Preview: Boys Basketball
Head coach: Al Coleman (10th season)
Last year’s record: 15-10
Key returnees: Legend Dominguez (Sr. G), Matt Domville (Sr. F), Matt Vasel (Sr. G), Alex Lin (Jr. F), Ryan Yellin (Sr. G), Kevin Smith (Sr. F/C), Brendan Culloo (Sr. G), Brian Andreasen (Sr. G)
Key losses: Colin Dedrick, Jon Piccinich, Eric Ziccarelli, Justin Balestra, Calvin Ralph, Kyle McManus
Key newcomers: Justin Nicita (So.), Matt Harris (Jr.), Justin Schaumberger (Jr.), Jack Ward (Jr.), Elan Hort (Jr.), Tristan Moorehead (Jr.), James Pfeifer (Jr.)
Strengths of team: Shooting. “The best thing that we have going for us right now is our ability to shoot the basketball.”
Areas that need improvement: Defense. “Defense is our biggest problem. Guarding your man, boxing out, and limiting second chance points.”
Outlook: Dominguez (14.4 points per game) and Vasel (15.4 ppg) will look to be the driving force for PV. The Indians are coming off of a season where they were the No. 8 seed in the state sectional tournament, ultimately falling to Ramapo. During one stretch, PV won eight of nine games, en route to a bid in the state tournament. PV went 4-5 against their divisional opponents last season, including a 51-50 win over Old Tappan.
Coach’s comment: “Oh this is a great group of guys, very close knit, and they all work very hard day in and day out during practice,” Coleman said. “I want this team to get better with everyday, and play the best basketball that we possibly can from the first game of the season to the last game.”
Robert Saul graduated in 2019.
