Indians host Old Tappan tonight in season opener
Head coach: Jeff Jasper (42nd year)
Last year’s record: 16-12
Key returnees: Amanda Verbraska (Sr. F), Grace Thomas (Sr. G), Krista Voto (Sr. F), Kim Pane (Sr. G), Lyndsay Grilo (Sr. F), Elsa DiGiacopo (Sr. F), Kate Gallagher (Jr. G), Gina Criscuolo (Jr. F), Megan Garay (Jr. G), Shannon Culloo (So. G).
Key losses: Lisa Marcellari (G), Chrissy Loganchuk (F).
Key newcomers: Izzy Bussanich (Fr. G), Kelly Petro (Fr. G), Lindsay Rohde (Fr. F), Kelly Smith (Fr. G), and Toriana Tabasco (Fr. G).
Strengths: Fundamentals, defense, strong freshman class.
Areas that need improvement: Team cohesion.
Outlook: Jasper was pleased with the way his team closed out last season, winning five of its last seven games. This included a win in the first round of the North 1, Group 3 Sectional Tournament, where the team beat Montville 48-36 before being defeated by Northern Highlands in the quarterfinals, 48-28. If the veteran leadership on the team helps the younger players to come along quickly, the Indians could be dangerous at the end of the year when the games matter most.
Coach’s comment: “We play among the most challenging schedules of any public school in Bergen County. Our league schedule is loaded, the Poli Tournament attracts the best teams, and our independent schedule has all the heavy weights of the county. The goal is always rather simple: be better tomorrow than we are today and be better today than we were yesterday.”
