Winter track team members warm up before a practice

Head coach: Coach John Murtaugh (5th season)

Last year’s record: Winter track doesn’t have a specific record, but there were two first team, all county runners who were ranked nationally.

Key returnees: Chelsea Lee (Sr.), Abby Lee (Sr.), Jessica Himmelman (Sr.), Melissa Purcell (So.), Evan Jones (Sr.), Jeff Roberts (Jr.).

Key losses: AJ Hall, Nurlan Herburger.

Key newcomers: John McGrath (Jr.), John Coyle (Jr.).

Strengths: The team is pretty solid throughout, but middle distance and distance are exceptionally strong for both the boys and girls.

Areas that need improvement: As the season is still opening, it’s tough to tell where the team will need improvement. However, winter track has become one of the most important seasons for talented runners, due to the fact that the coaches pick and choose what meets we attend. Hopefully, the team will qualify for the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City, where it would compete against some of the best athletes in the country.

Coach’s comment: “The success of any team is how the kids either respond to new ideas or even the old ideas. ‘Ancora Imparo’ is a quote that I love when talking about my team, it means ‘I am still learning’ in Latin. As long as we continue to learn and keep open minds, athletically and emotionally, the only thing we can do is succeed.”
