Winter sports preview: wrestling

PV heads to Lakeland Tournament on Saturday, hosts Indian Hills on Tuesday

Head coach: Tom Gallione (10th Season)

Last year’s record: 10-14

Key returnees: Chris Carcich (Sr. 126), Paul Giovanni (Sr. 195), Evan Pleasic (Sr. 152), Mike Martino (Jr. 106), Nick Timpanaro (Jr. 160).

Key losses: Danny White (138), Alex Moore (145), Steve Arcidiacono (132), Colin Burns (285), Bjorn Kringlen (170).

Key newcomers: Casey Lewis (Fr. 170), Nolan Shields (Fr. 120), Robbie Natelli (Fr. 120), Jake Prusha (Fr. 120).

Strengths of team: Tough lower and middleweights.

Areas that need improvement: Depth in upper weights, lack of a bona fide hammer in lineup.

Outlook:  Last season, the Indians had some ups and downs and were on the short side of some close dual matches. Gallione is hoping that some of his returning juniors and seniors know what it takes to win those close matches. They’ll need to find replacements for District 8 placewinners White and Moore, who both graduated. White is third on PV’s all-time wins list with 104.

Coach’s comment: “This will be a fairly young team with only a few wrestlers with varsity experience. The season will depend on how all the young and new wrestlers in the lineup develop. If they continue to improve, it will be a successful season.”
