2026 Winter Sports Recap

Winter Track

Key Runners:

Girls: Allie Polyniak (Sr.) and Kylie DeVincenzo (Fr.)

Boys: Marcus Koshy (Sr.), Cooper Breslaw (Sr.), Brian Slasinski (Sr.), and Cameron Sidrow (Jr.)

Memorable Moment:

Jambar Coaches HOF Invitational: In the first meet of the season, the boys and girls quickly hit the ground running. With many boys and girls winning several events, the teams overall would have won the invitational if there was team scoring. The state and county leading times that were set by PV runners was a confidence booster and foreshadowed the successful season that followed.

Challenges/Setbacks:

The main hurdle the track team had to overcome was the cold, snowy weather. Due to the track being covered in snow, freezing temperatures, and injuries to talented runners, consistent, worthwhile practices were hard to come by. Training for field events, hurdles, and running was restricted due to the harsh conditions. Yet, the team stayed resilient and motivated in their practice. The team used the hallways, weight room, and brought things inside to keep up their energy and focus. In the end, they didn’t let the cold ruin their times and results.

Accomplishments:

On the girls side, the 4×400 relay had a remarkable season. Each leg’s runner varied across meets due to injuries and availability, but consisted of Allie Polyniak (Sr.), Paige Wizemann (So.), Sophie Fischer (So.), Emilia Rettew (Sr.), and Lucy Smith (So.). Over the course of the season, their blazing speed won the Big North League race, placed top 6 in Bergen County, 2nd in their state section, and 5th in All State Group 2.

For the boys, senior Marcus Koshy followed up his impressive cross country season with a successful winter track campaign that included being Bergen County’s 800m champion, advancing to the State Group meet in the 800 and 1600, and anchoring the boys Sprint Medley Relay that medaled at county relays.

Boys Swimming

The Boys Swimming team went 4-4 on their season and 3-1 in the Big North.

Key Players:

Nathan Jeong (Sr.) and Zachary Cinek (So.) led the way for the team. Cinek finished the season with only one finish outside of the top two. As well, Jeong placed first in every 100 breaststroke race this season.

Memorable Meets:

1/06/26 Pascack Valley vs. Indian Hills: The Boys swimming team had a win over Indian Hills, 91-76, their closest game of the season. The boys dominated the events, only losing two events out of the entire meet. This was a huge game as this was their second win in a row and assisted them to ending the season at .500.

Challenges/Setbacks:

With only two seniors, the biggest challenge for the boys was the lack of experience. Despite winning some meets, the boys did not win more than two meets in a row the whole season.

Looking Ahead:

This swimming team is extremely young. They will be graduating two seniors and have sophomores and juniors who will have more experience for next year. They will be able to replicate this season, and could potentially add on more wins next season.

Girls Swimming

The girls swimming team finished with a final record of 7-3, going 3-1 in the division. The team lost to Passaic Tech in the NJSIAA Tournament, Semifinals Round, North 1, Group A. This was one of their most successful seasons in recent school history.

Key Players:

Amanda Bramley (Sr), and Phoebe Garretson, (Jr), led the team with multiple great wins throughout the season. They helped the team secure wins over Livingston, Ridgewood, and River Dell.

Memorable Meets:

2/05/26 Pascack Valley vs Livingston: Advanced to the NJSIAA Tournament, Semifinal Round with the win. This was their closest win of the season with a score of 89-81. In the win, Bramley won all three of her events. As well, Maizie Catanzaro (Jr.) won the 100-meter breaststroke by a time of 0.62 seconds, the closest race of the meet.

Challenges/Setbacks:

Their main challenge was the team had to play NJSIAA North 1, Group A Tournament winner twice in Passaic Tech. In both losses, Pascack Valley won 3 events total, showing the dominance of Passaic Tech this season.

Looking Ahead:

While Pascack Valley will be graduating Bramley, a leader of this talented Pascack Valley team, they have many juniors and sophomores who will be looking to step into a higher role this season.

Wrestling

Key players:

Adan Cedeno (Sr.): In his final season with PV, and as a captain, Cedeno had only five losses all year in a total of thirty five matches.

Dylan Biegel (Sr.): Another one of the captains for the Panthers, Dylan Biegel led the team to their win against High Point in the sectional finals.

Luke Stempkowski (Jr.): Stempkowski was named the team’s third captain as a junior and he had only two losses all year.

Jacob Inserra (So.): Inserra had an incredible season going undefeated up until the final round of regions on March 7th.

Memorable matches:

12/20 TCNJ Pride Tournament: At the beginning of the season, the Panthers went down to TCNJ in what would be a “good indication of a strong season.” The Panthers captured the win in that tournament to keep a solid start to the season.

2/18 Pascack Valley at High Point: The Panthers went to High Point for the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 Team Tournament Final Round. PV got the victory, and got the team’s first sectional title since 2018.

Challenges and setbacks:

In an interview with Head Coach Beyer, he had this to say about the team’s challenges: “Keeping people healthy. It’s the winter season, there were a lot of different sicknesses going around, we’ve had guys get sick. We’ve had to move people into different weight classes. Keeping people healthy injury wise.”

Girls Basketball

The Pascack Valley Girls Basketball team finished the season 16-12. As the 5 seed in the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1 Group 2 Tournament, the Panthers fell to Mawah in the second round 23-21.

Key Players:

Raina Gibbs (Jr.): Rainia Gibbs was the leading scorer for PV this season with 350 points while accumulating 62 three pointers made. With one season left in her high school career, Gibbs is 55 points away from 1,000.

Emma Costello (Jr.): Emma Costello was a key contributor for the Pascack Valley girls basketball team this season with 150 points in 27 games played.

Keira O’Cathain (So.): Keira O’Cathain led the team in rebounds with 44. The sophomore also was the second highest scorer for the Panthers this season with 230 points.

Memorable Games:

1/16 Pascack Valley vs. Rutherford: Pascack Valley came out on top against Rutherford 34-31. Keira O’Cathain led the Panthers in scoring with 11 points. The Panthers were leading the Bulldogs 26-6 at halftime, but Rutherford outscored PV 14-5 in the third quarter and went on a 11-3 run in fourth before coming up short to PV.

2/26 Pascack Valley vs. Vernon: Pascack Valley took down Vernon 57-27 in the first round of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1 Group 2 Tournament to advance to the second round. O’Cathain led PV in the scoring and rebound category with 21 points and 15 rebounds.

Challenges/Setbacks:

The girls basketball team competes in a tough conference, and this season we saw a lack of offensive production which caused them to not come out on top in many close games. Raina Gibbs missed time at the end of the season after sustaining a knee injury which caused the team to not make it deep into the state tournament.

Looking Ahead:

After 53 seasons, head coach Jeff Jasper will be retiring. Serving as the only head coach in the history of the program, the girls basketball team will be hiring a new head coach next season. The team will also be losing 9 seniors. Some key returners will be assets to the team.

Boys Bowling

The Pascack Valley Boys Bowling Team finished the year 15-2. As the one seed, they advanced to the finals of the NJSIAA North Jersey Section 1, Group 2 Tournament, where the boys lost to the one-seed Demarest team, 2-1 for a second straight year. Despite the loss in the finals, this was one of the most successful seasons for Pascack Valley in recent years.

Key Players:

Tommy Magarelli (Sr.): Magarelli had 9,813 total pins this year and a high set of 717, with a high game of 300. He finished with an average of 204.44 on the season.

Brett Fischbein (Jr.): Fischbein had 10,178 total pins this year and tallied a high set of 706, with his highest scoring game being 279. Fischbein had an average of 207.71.

Lucas Mercado (Jr.): Mercado had 10,532 total pins this season along with a high set of 732, and a high game of 289. Mercado led the team in average at 214.94.

This was a remarkable season for each of them as they all increased their averages from last year.

Memorable Matches:

1/06/26 Pascack Valley vs. Bergen Tech: Boys Bowling had one of their biggest matches of the season against Bergen Tech. After dropping the first set to Bergen Tech, they were able to battle back and win the last two sets to take the match. In the match, Lucas Mercado (Jr.) knocked down 688 pins.

Challenges/Setbacks:

The Boys Bowling team only lost twice in the 2025-26 bowling season. Their toughest opponent was Demarest. While they started off the season defeating them 7-0, they dropped the last 2 matches against Demarest, including their tournament final.

Looking Ahead:

They have a lot of key returning players in Mercado and Fischbein. The biggest challenge will be replacing Magarelli next season.

Girls Bowling

The Pascack Valley Girls Bowling Team finished the season defeated, going 0-13 on the season.

Key Players:

Luli SooHoo (Jr): Despite a poor season as a team, SooHoo still performed well individually, averaging a score of 133 in 11 games played.

Challenges/Setbacks:

Despite the number in the loss column, the team still played competitively, with many games being very close. In fact, in a handful of games, the combined team average was higher than their opponent, but players still lost head-to-head.

Looking Ahead:

As a group made up of only sophomores and juniors, the team will not lose any players next season. The team will hope to work closer to a winning season like they did in 2023-24.

Hockey

The Pascack Ice Hockey team finished 13-8 this season, and 4-2 in the Big North.

Key players: Owen Dargan (Sr.) and Jack Sheehan (Sr.)

Memorable moment: 2/24/26 vs. Old Tappan

In the first round of the NJSIAA Sectional Tournament, North, Public Co-Op, the boys hockey team defeated Old Tappan by a dominating score of 10-2. This win was led by a hat trick from Joe Maire (Jr.). 10 different players recorded a point for Valley in this game.

Challenges/Setbacks:

The biggest challenge the Ice Hockey team faced this season was injuries. At some point throughout the season, captains Owen Dargan and Jack Sheehan had to miss some time, which was crucial in some of the bigger games when they needed somebody to step up in a big spot.

Looking ahead:

The team is only graduating three seniors, all being captains. Therefore, they are going to have to rely on other players to fill in and be leaders next season.

Boys Basketball

The Pascack Valley Boys Basketball team finished their season with a 14-15 record, finishing 3-7 in league play. They lost in the second round NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 Tournament.

Key Players:

Dante DaCosta (Sr.): One of the two returning Varsity athletes from the previous seasons, DaCosta was set to be a key player for Valley. Throughout the season, he showcased defensive stability and an offensive spark during key moments.

Liam Higgins (Sr.): The other returning Varsity athlete from previous seasons,  Higgins stepped into his biggest role yet, as Captain of the team. Higgins was the key to the Panthers offense, and served as a leader for the younger and more inexperienced players on the team.

Eli Tenzer (Sr.): Coming into a new role as a Varsity starter for the first time, Tenzer was a great and reliable three-point shooter throughout the year, and had key defensive plays throughout.

Memorable Games:

12/19 Pascack Valley @ Riverdell: After a tough loss on opening night, the boys bounced back with a great win over Riverdell, 52-48. The boys rallied behind a great performance from Liam Higgins (Sr.) where he dropped 24 points, and Eli Tenzer (Sr.) who added ten for the Panthers.

1/22 Pascack Valley vs. Old Tappan: On senior night, the boys were able to come from behind and secure the win, 48-46. Liam Higgins (Sr.) had 20 points, including the game-winning three. Eli Tenzer (Sr.) had 14 points as well.

Challenges/Setbacks:

A lack of Varsity experience and difficult schedule led to some early struggles for the Boys. As the season went on, they got more comfortable in big moments, and were able to weather through the difficult schedule and league.
