Holes in the ceiling were part of the damage sustained by the PV boys’ locker room.

The Pascack Valley administration decided to limit access to the boys’ locker room last Friday. According to an email sent by Principal Tom DeMaio, due to sustained damage, students will no longer be allowed in the boys’ locker room without “proper supervision” by a teacher.

“There was damage to locker doors. [They were] dented in or ripped off and there was damage to a lot of ceiling tiles,” DeMaio said. “We’re pretty sure most of it has occurred after school hours when there isn’t specific supervision.”

As a result of this, the main boys’ locker room will be locked after school. The girls’ locker room will be unaffected and both team rooms will still be available for athletics.

“People sometimes think they’re entitled and think they’re being funny by causing damage and don’t think about others.” DeMaio said. “People are going to have to adjust accordingly. They are going to have to use bathrooms to change and their [personal] lockers hallways to store their stuff.”

“If we can find out who’s been doing this damage and hold them accountable,” DeMaio continued, “then maybe we’ll consider opening it up.”

Damage has not been sustained to any other part of school, according to DeMaio, though he conceded that there is “always the potential”.

“It’s always the last thing I like to do,” DeMaio said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t learned to take care of things that are given to us. When the actions of a few affect a whole bunch of people, it’s a shame.”
