Mike Pimpinella celebrates his touchdown reception in the first quarter of PV’s 49-7 victory over Bergenfield on Oct. 10, 2014. PV officials are celebrating a decision by the Big North conference allowing the school to replace its one non-public opponent on its schedule, DePaul, with a public school opponent.

Bergenfield was riding high after upsetting Paramus a week earlier.

Pascack Valley brought the Bears back down to earth.

Colin Dedrick hooked up with Mike Pimpinella on a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes as the Indians jumped all over Bergenfield and cruised past the Bears 49-7 at Pascack Valley on Friday night.

On PV’s opening possession, Dedrick (5-for-8, 93 yards) found Pimpinella for a 27 yard touchdown pass. After a fumble recovery by Greg Collier on the 16 yard line, PV took over and again Dedrick found Pimpinella, this time for a 16 yard touchdown pass, and the Indians led 14-0 just minutes into the game.

Bergenfield gave some fight early in the first quarter though, as DJ Haskins found his brother Jovani on a 71 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-7 Pascack Valley. From there, it all went downhill for Bergenfield.

It was all Valley running back Jorge Cortes the rest of the way, though. Cortes started his domination with a 15 yard run for a score, to put Valley up 21-7. The second was a one yard touchdown scamper, to make it 28-7.  It was the following 2 plays that were the ones to watch as Cortes took the ball 54 yards to the 9-yard line and from there into the end zone on consecutive plays.

The final running score for Cortes was his longest touchdown run of the day, a 29-yarder, and for five of those yards he was carrying Jovani Haskins on his back. Cortes finished the game with impressive efficiency, getting only ten carries, scoring on five, and rushing for 157 yards.

The second team got a lot of action in the second half, most notably senior Nathan Porter, who had a 39-yard catch from quarterback Legend Dominguez, which would eventually lead to the final TD, a one yard run by Matt Urrea. The run game was also very impressive as Matt Urrea and Andrew Flores both carried the ball very efficiently. Urrea ran for 64 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown and Flores ran for 16 yards on 5 carries. Urrea’s touchdown put the game at its final score, 49-7.

After the game, the Valley players and coaches were in high spirits. Dedrick and Pimpinella were very impressed with the Valley offensive line, which created holes for Cortes to make big runs and allowed Dedrick to make plays downfield.

“The offensive line did great.” Pimpinella said.

“We wouldn’t have won the game without Jake Padva, Max Putterman, Jimmy Alburtus, Joe Schnugg, and Joe Figueroa,” Dedrick added.

PV will play at Old Tappan next week in a key match-up of two 4-1 squads.
