PV’s Executive Council 2015-16 poses for family picture day. The 2016-17 Executive Council will be elected Tuesday.

On Tuesday, May 3, students will have the opportunity to vote for next year’s Executive Council. The Council includes a President, Vice-President, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, and Secretary.

According to Mr. Shawn Buchanan, who oversees the Executive Council, the Council represents the entire student body. Incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors can run for these positions. However, sophomores and juniors are more limited on which positions they are eligible for.

Candidates are now in the process of preparing speeches, which will be addressed to the student body the day of the election. Candidates were told not to campaign using social media in order to avoid any complications.

Once the positions have been voted on, other students can apply for the highly competitive appointed positions within the Council, including Athletic Liaisons, Class Liaisons, and Representatives. It is then up to the new Executive Council to choose who fills these positions.

Buchanan said that the Council is extremely important, and each member has a heavy influence on the school. It is up to the Council to evaluate the climate of the school and to essentially think what changes need to be made and what can be done better.

Executive Council is different than Class Council, where members focus only on their grade level. According to Buchanan, the Executive Council must “do what is best for the entire school.”

He also emphasized that these are important positions and are not to be taken lightly. Although each position has its own individual requirements, leadership abilities and responsibility are necessary characteristics. No previous political experience is required.

Students are encouraged to get involved in the student government, even if that just means voting, according to Buchanan.

This year, the ballot goes as follows.

President- Emilio Quevedo, Matthew Urrea, Chloe Witt

Vice President- Jacob Ricco

Public Relations Officer- Jake Aferiat, Sue Lee, Andrew Merli, Brian Sumereau

Treasurer- Nicole Beckemeyer, Kyle Comito, Matt Novakowski, James Nugent

Secretary- Drew Aral, Mary Kate Viceconte
