Girls swim team looks to capitalize on strength in numbers

Valley returns with key seniors in 2021

The girl’s team looks to take advantage of all 27 swimmers that they have, allowing coach Courtney Rems to give all the girls a rest.

“We [have] 25 girls on the team this year,” Rems said. “Kind of the opposite of the boys [team].”

The girls have both strengths in numbers and skill this year. With a lot of girls on the team, it is important to establish a sense of teamwork and leadership.

“We are very fortunate we have a lot of seniors coming back this year,” Rems said. “Jennifer Malocha and Kate Kavashansky, who are captains, would be two of the returning seniors that we’re looking to lead our team.”

Malocha and Kavashansky are both strong swimmers who have experience working with Coach Rems and the swim team. They have important roles in building up themselves and their teammates, but they won’t have to do it alone.

“Our key returning juniors we have for the girls are Nora Fendian, Cori Freeman, Katie Yoo, and Karen Kirkorian,” Rems said. “They were all elite swimmers last year, so we are definitely expecting a lot from them this season as well.”
