Koon Thai, a new eatery in Hillsdale, brings customers an intimate setting with delicious Thai food.
From the appetizer list, The Valley Echo Co-Editor-in-Chief Maya Schlessinger and I picked the fish tacos, which come with two miniature tacos for $12. In the tacos, the red snapper tempura and mango create the perfect mix of sweet and salty. Additionally, the palm sugar lime sauce was delicious, but I would have liked a more generous portion of the sauce. The fish tacos come with two miniature tacos for $12.
From the list of main plates, we chose the Classic Pad Thai for $18 and a dish called “Hunger” for $23.
The Classic Pad Thai has deliciously crafted stir-fry noodles and a generous amount of fried chicken. The fried chicken in the Classic Pad Thai was so crunchy and flavorful.
In “Hunger,” there are drunken noodles (a spicy stir-fry mixed with a savory sauce), topped with fresh shrimp and a handful of crunchy romaine lettuce. There is also a squeeze of lime, which adds just the right amount of citrus to the dish. The classic drunken noodles were executed perfectly.
Koon Thai offers three different desserts including the Ding Ding (coconut ice cream), mango ice cream (with fresh mango and sticky rice), and Pandan Custard (coconut chiffon cake). However, our main plates were a good portion, so we did not have dessert.
The interior of the restaurant is elegantly designed with modern light fixtures and simple colors. There were beautiful plants adorning the ceiling and a beautiful wallpaper design on one of the walls.
The owner of Koon Thai is the same owner of Ammata Thai Kitchen in River Vale, NJ. The restaurants offer similar dishes, but both the menu and restaurant are bigger at the River Vale location. Despite the size difference, I believe that Koon Thai is able to offer a more intimate and relaxed dining experience.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Koon Thai. For that reason, Koon Thai deserves a 4 out of 5 stars.
