Bringing light to the valley
PV sophomores help shed light on the issue of sex trafficking
PV sophomores sit in the front of the class, watching the documentary, “Tricked.” It shows the lives of different sex trafficking victims and their struggles to get out of their situations. They remember watching the same documentary last year.
These sophomores, Bianca Belmonte and Allison McGuire, are the presidents of the Pascack Period course, Light in the Valley. The course originally started three years ago when Noelle Garbaccio and Ashley Kasperavich created it for a project in their sophomore english class.
Light in the Valley meets every Pascack Period B in room 201. Their main focus this year is their bra drive. Donations can be dropped off at room 230 until June.
The bras will be donated to sex trafficking victims. These bras will be used for the girls to start their own business to help them start a new life.
Belmonte and McGuire joined Light in the Valley last year because they wanted to make a difference after seeing the documentary, “Tricked.”
“It was such a scary issue since we were all girls in the club at the time,” Belmonte said. “We had discussions and it just really affected us.”
The advisor of the Pascack Period is Connor Quinlan, whom just joined the course this year.
“To hear them talk about the issues these women face on a daily basis I really can’t even begin to think about, it really opens up your understanding of how much work needs to be done,” Quinlan said.
LIV recently partnered with Juluka Yoga in Hillsdale to raise money for the Polaris Project and Free the Girls organization. During the month of May, the eight dollar cost of a session will go to these organizations. The sessions are Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays 5 p.m.
“(Along with the bra drive) we are also just trying to raise awareness because not everyone knows about sex trafficking and how it happens almost everywhere and how frequent it is,” Belmonte said.
