Mochimoly: the rise of the mochi donut
Park Ridge store, Mochimoly, executes an unlikely dessert combination: Korean mochi and American donuts.
Mochi donuts are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside due to the mochi rice flour. They are all topped off with different flavored frostings and toppings. The unique shape helps make them perfect for sharing. Each donut looks like eight donut holes put together to form a circle and are easily pulled apart. One mochi donut is sold for three dollars and a dozen is sold for 33 dollars.
The group’s mutual favorite was the mint chocolate donut. The winter themed flavor had a freshness to it, all topped off with mini chocolate chips. The unique and tasty donut received a 9.5/10.
Another favorite was the mango pineapple donut. Mochimoly’s fruit flavors have such a delicious fragrance and pack a great flavor. The mango-pineapple combination was so tangy and refreshing, complementing the crispy donut and sprinkle topping wonderfully. It received a 9/10.
The strawberry donut upheld the fruit flavor’s reputation. The frosting was so flavorful and was accented with strawberry powder. A piece of chocolate Pocky laid on top, providing a variety of texture and taste. It received a 8.5/10.
The chocolate donut was a little underwhelming. The frosting had a nice nutella taste, but it was missing a complementary flavor. The large chocolate covered pretzel on top offered a nice crunch, but was hard to eat. The chocolate donut was solid, but nothing special, earning a rating of 6.5/10.
The churro donut was coated in sugar and cinnamon. The cinnamon flavor was very prominent and could be overwhelming. It received an 8/10.
The cookie dough donut was presented immaculately. There were two mini cookies placed on top with chocolate sprinkles spread around. The flavor is closer to a caramel flavor than cookie dough, but it was still delicious. The crunch from the mini cookies added perfectly to the flavor. It received a 8.25/10.
In addition to the carefully curated, delicious donuts, Mochimoly also sells hotdogs. The options include: a hotdog, a cheesedog, and a half cheese and half hotdog. Each option comes on a stick and is covered in breadcrumbs. The cheese pulls were perfect and the hotdog tasted good, but the breadcrumbs were disappointingly flavorless. They cost five dollars each.
Although small, Mochimoly had an incredible ambiance. The pink walls, accented with blue decor, create a bright and cheery space. A large mochi donut-shaped neon sign brightens up the window. The only downside to the store was the lack of seating. There are a few stools along the wall, but ordering food to go seems like the better option. The service was quick and the worker we came across was friendly.
Overall, Mochimoly deserves a 4.5/5. While the donuts were scrumptious, the hot dogs were somewhat disappointing
