Photo Essay: PV students travel to the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota

Over the summer, a group of Pascack Valley students traveled to the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, home of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe, with history teachers Leah Jerome and Marisa Mathias. The students volunteered at the Cheyenne River Youth Project. They set up the School Supply Distribution and walked children and their parents through the drive to make sure they had everything they needed for the school year. The students also hiked at Bear Butte State Park and visited notable sites such as Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Badlands.

The students met during Pascack Period last year to plan the trip and learn about Native American culture and history. This year, they intend to form a club dedicated to this cause and the Cheyenne River Youth Project.
