PV outlasts Fuller, Old Tappan

In the battle of Pascack Valley against Jordan Fuller, PV came out ahead.

The versatile Fuller rushed for over 300 yards, but PV stopped him when it mattered most and held on for a narrow 35-28 victory over Old Tappan Friday night at Northern Valley-Old Tappan High School.

With just under three minutes left, Pascack Valley made perhaps the biggest defensive play of the game. Jack Madden recovered Will Choi’s forced fumble at midfield and sealed the deal for the Valley victory.

“I saw the ball pop out and I just jumped on it,” Madden said.

PV (5-1) had scored the go-ahead touchdown moments earlier on a short run by Swatek.

Devin Fuller, Jordan’s brother, graduated two years ago and now plays for UCLA. PV defensive coordinator Jim Cleary knew that, like his older brother was, Jordan Fuller would be hard to stop. Fuller who played mostly quarterback but also running back and receiver during the game, had not played quarterback in the past few weeks due to an injury.

“He is real different to stop at quarterback,” Cleary said. “We went back to the game plan we had against Devin.”

Fuller touched the ball on just about every single play for the Golden Knights (4-2).

“The best player is going to get the ball in crunch time,” Cleary said.

As usual, the key to PV’s victory was their offensive line, which created holes for Swatek who had nine carries for 43 yards including three touchdowns. Jorge Cortes had many large runs and gained 155 yards on 19 carries for PV, which moved the ball consistently all night long.

“The offensive line was terrific,” Cortes said.

The offense also had two screen passes that went for large amounts of yardage. One went to Cortes for 34 yards, and the other went to Greg Collier for 30 yards.

“The screens worked against Montclair,” said PV coach Craig Nielsen.

It’s quite possible these two teams could meet again in the North 1, Group 4 playoffs. Coming into the game, they were second and third in the section in power points behind unbeaten Roxbury.

“We won the state last year and we’re winning again this year,” Cortes said.
