The 2015 edition came to a close for PV baseball on Monday, a 10-6 loss in the first round of the state playoffs.

Over the last two weeks, I met with and talked to some of the seniors on the team (in person and via email), talking about their Senior Day, and reminiscing about their PV baseball careers.

Senior Day was on Saturday May 9 against Rutherford. Senior John Ryan Clark was the starter and teammates said it was his best start of his career. Behind Clark’s pitching the Indians won the game 6-1.

But as the week came and the Indians’ season ended, it was time to write a season wrap-up article, once again I reached out to the seniors and Dan Corvo, Nick Novakowski, and Ron Villone, who had very positive thoughts on the season.

Corvo: The season was successful and we accomplished everything we wanted. We won the league most importantly, and made an appearance in the county and state games. The outcomes of the games were what we hoped, but it was still a great season.

Novakowski repeated almost exactly what Corvo said, ” I thought it was a hell of a season. We won our league and made it into counties and states.”

Novakowski added one more characteristic about the season, “We never gave up and just kept on fighting.”

Villone added something different, “I think it was a building season. We had a ton of younger guys who really stepped up to the plate.”

Then we talked about the last four years.

Villone: They are unforgettable.

Corvo: I would say they were four successful years and I really grew as a player learning and picking up things from seniors every year.

Novakowski: I had an amazing time and many great experiences playing for four years with Valley Baseball. When you play with the same group of friends throughout high school, it’s truly something special being apart of Valley Baseball. We grew as a family and bonded very closely together. They’re like my brothers.

I also asked about which senior that they thought stepped up the most this year.

Novakowski:One Senior I believe stepped up the most was Nathan Porter. He shows great leadership on and off the field. When called to start second base he jumped at it. He did his job and made outstanding plays helping this team.

Villone did not single out one player, instead, “I think the entire senior class stepped up because we had to win.

Corvo: I think Chase (Strynkowski) really stepped up this year as a vocal leader. He had just come off of Tommy John Surgery but really helped out the bullpen this year and gave us some really key innings this year.

We also had talked about the best experience playing Pascack Valley baseball.

Corvo: Coming in relief of the state game against Demarest and winning the game.

Villone: Meeting new guys; making memories.

Novakowski: Going perfect 24-of-24 stolen base attempts in one season.

For my last question, we talked about the legacy of the Class of 2015 in PV Baseball. Novakowski said it was, “Welcome to the Tank because we never hung up our jerseys and called it a quits.”

Overall, PV baseball had a great season, which included the highlights of a record of 15-11, winning the league, and making Bergen County and North 1, Group 3 playoff appearance.

I would like to thank Nick Novakowski, Ron Villione, and Dan Corvo for participating in the end of season article. I would also like to thank Dave Demboski for giving me the stats for every game during the 2015 season.
