Pascack Swimming season previews

December 10, 2019

Swimming- Boys

Coach: Courtney Rems (First year)

Last year’s record: 6-5

Key Returners: Luke Pothen (Sr.), Christian Hanna (Sr.), Edward Fominykh (Sr.), Tyler Marzano (Jr.), Sean Fei (Jr.), John Kim (So.)

Key Losses: Zach Zeller and Brendan Broesler

Key Newcomers: Zachary Berde (Fr.)

Strength of team: According to Rems, every swimmer on the team is extremely talented and has a very bright future in the sport.

Weakness of team: With only 13 boys on the team, it will be difficult to fill races.

Outlook: Rems, who is entering her first year at head coach after spending five years as an assistant, hopes that the team can be a “strong member” of its league. “We’re hoping to have great performances in counties– I think most of our male swimmers will be going to [counties] this year,” Rems said. We’re just hoping that even though we’re down in numbers [from last year], we have enough strong swimmers to be competitive at the state sectional level.”

Coach’s Comment: “This is probably the most talented group of male swimmers that we have ever had in the 15 years of Pascack Valley swimming,” Rems said.

Swimming- Girls

Coach: Courtney Rems (First year)

Last year’s record: 6-5

Key Returners: Jennifer Malocha (Jr.), Katie Smith (Sr.), Cori Freeman (So.), Emma Wentland (Sr.), Nora Fendian (So.), Katie Yoo (So.), Kay DiSalvo (Jr.), Lucy DiSalvo (Jr.), Isis Gotlib (Jr.), Sabrina Low (Jr.)

Key Losses: Haleigh Marzano and Yujin Kim

Key Newcomers: Karen Kirkorian (Fr.)

Strength of team: The team is full of hard workers who, after falling short last year, are extra motivated to reclaim the league title that Pascack Swimming has held for 8 out of the last 9 years.

“We’re hungry for [the league title] and [reigning champion PCTI is] probably very happy with what they did last year,” Rems said. “[This year,] we [will] work harder so that we can get [the title] and they don’t.”

Weakness of team: Overcoming the departures of last year’s seniors.

Outlook: Entering her first season as head coach after spending five as an assistant, Rems believes the team can contend for a league title again as they are motivated by the fact that they didn’t win last year.

Coach’s Comment: “I think the [team’s] driving force is going to be losing that league title we want that back from PCTI.”
