‘The Invasion of 1492’ in print

“The Invasion of 1492” by Minche Kim is a remembrance project for Indigenous Day and Columbus Day. The sky depicts a setting sun, symbolizing the Native Americans’ loss of their land, while the tribe of people in the back depicts the Trail of Tears. The land the tribe is walking on is transitioning from green grass to the colors of the Italian flag (from left to right). The colors and shape of the Native American war bonnet were inspired by an art piece created by a Cherokee artist. The ship depicts one of Columbus’ ships Santa Maria. The protest signs were inspired by actual signs from Anti-Columbus Day protests. The bowsprit is pointed at the neck of the Native American symbolizing the cultural and physical losses the Native Americans experienced through the invasion of 1492.
