Wednesday Morning Quarterback: Farrell’s return adds new dimension to PV offense

First play. First score.

That what the beginning of the end of the season for Passaic Valley, a 63-yard touchdown pass from Colin Dedrick to Steve Farrell, which led to the eventual final score of 48-7 in North 1, Group 4 quarterfinal action Friday night at Pascack Valley.

It was not even a game for the top-seeded Indians(8-2), who had their second team in by the beginning of the third quarter.

“I’m excited to be back,” said Farrell, who had not played yet this season due to a collarbone injury.

This was the possible excitement that fans did not get to see the whole season. The deep ball has not been used a much by the Indians, sticking to their usually ground and pound style that has been used so much the whole season. With Farrell’s return, this could add another weapon to the offense.

Sticking with the passing game, Dedrick overcame some woes from the Ramapo and Northern Highlands games with a solid performance, finishing the day 8-for-11 with 137 yards and the touchdown to Farrell.

Passaic Valley fell to 5-5, with two of those defeats at the hands of Pascack Valley.

The signature running game was another staple. Jorge Cortes ran for 176 yard on 16 carries to continue his 1,000 yard season.

In this Friday’s semifinal game, the Indians will face fourth-seeded Old Tappan (8-2), who beat Demarest 49-19 last week.

Coach Craig Nielsen noted that fans, “need to be louder than tonight” for next week’s game against the Golden Knights, who the Indians beat 35-28 four weeks ago.

“We always have more fans than them at their place,” said Nielsen. “We expect the same next week.”

Possible championship matchups:

On the other side of the bracket, No. 3 Paramus (9-1) and No. 2 Roxbury (8-2) moved on, as expected to the semifinals. Paramus beat #6 Nutley, 35-21 and Roxbury beat #7 Randolph, 41-28, in the first round of the playoffs.

If the Indians take care of business against Old Tappan, they will move to the championship game against the winner of the Paramus vs. Roxbury matchup. Last year, PV defeated Paramus in the North 1, Group 4 championship game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. The year before, PV lost to Roxbury in the championship game at Kean University. The final four teams all have championship experience and have all played each other in the playoffs in past years. This should lead to close semifinal games and possibly upsets in both games. All four teams have great chances to win the championship.
