Head coach Al Coleman talks to the team during its scrimmage against Garfield.

Coach: Al Coleman (13th season)

Last year’s record: 8-15

Key Losses: “Anytime seniors graduate, there’s always going to be a loss,” Coleman said. “Regardless of the name or how many, I think [the seniors] are what set the culture and tone for your program. All seniors are always going to be key losses for us.”

Key Returners: Ryan Thomas (Sr. G), Nate Dedrick (Sr. F), Austin Koolery (Jr. F), Johnny Noone (Sr. G), Thomas Dean (Jr. F) and Jake Wolf (Jr. G).

Key Newcomers: Tristan Harges (Fr. G), Jared Shiffman (Jr. G) and Owen Eberson (Jr. G).

“Tristan Harges has a possibility to be a special player if he continues to work at it, and continues to do the right things both on and off the court,” Coleman said.

Strength of team: “[The players] are very selfless,” Coleman said. “They’re always looking to get somebody free and move the ball to the next guy, so I think their ability to play with one-another and play off one-another is huge.”

Weakness of team: “Almost sometimes they’re too unselfish,” Coleman said. “[Selflessness] could be their greatest strength, but it could be their biggest weakness. Sometimes you need somebody to be that alpha male.”

Outlook: After losing Max Yellin– last year’s top scorer– to graduation, Coleman expects the team to fill the offensive void he leaves behind through a committee approach. Ryan Thomas, Johnny Noone and Austin Koolery specifically are expected to lead the way as the team looks to rebound from its second consecutive below .500 season.

“I think we’re looking at [the offensive attack] as a group,” Coleman said. “On any given night we have a couple guys in that lineup who could give us 20 [points] if we need it.”

Coach’s Comment: “It sounds cliché but I just hope they grow together and I hope they get better everyday that we’re in the gym because as [each individual player] gets better, [the team] gets better,” Coleman said. “I think it’s just about trusting the process, continuously building, and looking for a synergistic effect of the whole being greater than the parts.Starting Lineup:

“It’s all shaking out in practice,” Coleman said. “We’re looking at the film from our scrimmages and seeing how [the guys] react in practice when put in positions of [needing to] be comfortable when they’re uncomfortable.”
