Sam Cassidy looks forward to his year as freshmen class president.

Out of the 21 people who ran for a position on the Freshman Class Council, nine were elected by their classmates on Oct. 1 to lead them through their first year of high school. The winners have had some time to adjust to their new roles as leaders of the freshman class.

Newly elected president Sam Cassidy’s two main goals are to make freshman year memorable and to choose a good class charity.

“I want people to walk out of here in June and look back saying what a great year they had,” he said.

The council is in the process of fulfilling one of the goals right now. Cassidy explained that they have two charities in the running: the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation which helps fight poverty in New York City, providing education to children, job training to the unemployed, and programs for the homeless. In fact, students have the opportunity to vote for whichever charity they think they would better represent for the next four years.

In addition to Cassidy, Vice President Ava Giambona, Treasurer Jesse Oh, and Secretary Jamie Bader were elected. Elected Representatives Nicole Franklin, Jenny LaRocca, Billy Lyons, Emma Moskowitz, and Elisabeth Ralph will assist with open communication between the board and the rest of the class along with the newly appointed representatives Jenna Szabo, Josh Ulin, and Jerry Madden.

These 12 officers will do all that they can to make the first year of high school great for the whole class.

Cassidy said, “Being president has been pretty good so far,” he added. “I’ve already had some people walk up to me and share their ideas with me.”
