Junior Arianna Quevedo controls the ball against Mahwah. Quevedo and the girls soccer team will try to continue their strong play this week.

Undefeated after its first five games, the Pascack Valley Girl’s soccer team traveled to Tenafly for what would turn out to be its toughest test of the season.

Late in regulation, PV trailed 1-0, but with 26 seconds to play, senior Nicole Franklin netted the equalizing goal to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, the game headed to double overtime, when junior Arianna Quevedo found the back of the net to seal the game for the Indians.

Regarding the important win, Quevedo said, “Every game counts for our team, and we have made it a goal to win our league. When overtime comes, you have to fight for every ball and leave everything you have on the field because one loss could ruin all that you have worked for. When I saw the ball fly over the midfield I used every bit of energy I had to hit the ball over the keeper and place it in the back of the net.”

Three days later, Elizabeth Spadafino scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Wayne Valley.  However, the team is no longer unbeaten, following a 2-2 draw on Thursday against Mahwah. Spadafino and fellow senior Danielle Freeman scored both goals in the draw.

This week, the Indians (7-0-1) look to their continue their winning ways when they host Hackensack on Tuesday, and travel to Indian Hills on Thursday.

On Sunday afternoon, Pascack Valley will open up its Bergen County Tournament play against Emerson at home. PV is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, so it received byes in the first and second rounds.
