Girls Soccer: PV picks up win on senior night

Indians defeat Tenafly after seniors are honored

The PV girls soccer team continued its successful season with a 4-0 win over Tenafly last Thursday on senior night.

The four goals came from Elizabeth Spadafino, Danielle Freeman, Paige Skene, and Arianna Quevedo. Freeman, Spadafino, and Sam Ingannamorte all had an assist as the Indians collected their 16th win of the season.

Before the game, the Indians honored each of their nine seniors, Freeman, Spadafino, Lauren Hussey, Nicole Franklin, Kelly Smith, Isabella Bussanich, Jenny LaRocca, Erin Flanagan, and Rachel White, in a special ceremony.

Spadafino, a senior, was very excited to be recognized on senior night, as she has been a part of the soccer program at PV since she was a freshman.

“It was awesome, because watching all the other senior nights since I was a freshman I was like ‘wow, I can’t wait until mine,'” she said. “But I felt like it was so far away. And when it came and having all the seniors walk out and it was really weird.”

One of Spadafino’s role models as a freshman was there cheering her on as well. Kim Pane, a senior in the 2014-2015 graduating class, was in attendance for the game.

“Kim Pane was a senior when I was a freshman. She was at our game helping out because she’s the manager,” Spadafino said. “She was our captain so I looked up to her. She helped me since I was like ‘the baby,’ so having her there while I was the senior was pretty cool because time really flies.

And I was like ‘wow Kim, I remember when I was a freshman watching your senior night.’ Now I’m a senior. And having all of these seniors start, it’s just amazing how much we’ve accomplished so far, ” she said.

Coach Amy Lombard0 was impressed with her team’s play, mentioning how close they are as friends and how hard they play. However, the aspect that she really admires is how much they have evolved their game and stepped up to the task at hand.

“Last year we built and they learned a lot,” Lombardo said. “And this year they performed to their best. I’m going to miss this group of seniors.”

After defeating Wayne Valley 2-0 in the quarterfinals of North I, Group III sectional tournament on Thursday night, PV will take on Northern Highlands, the No.1 team in New Jersey, on Monday.  PV lost 5-1 against Northern Highlands in the semifinals of Bergen County Tournament.
