Juniors help propel golf team

High school golf has a dynamic that is very different from any other sport.

Only six people take part in a high school golf dual match, which limits that amount of people that you can actually have on a team. But of those six scores, only the four lowest count. The objective of golf is to receive the lowest score, which is also much different from almost every other sport.

The limited number of golfers often makes for a team that is predominately older, and this year’s PV team fits the description.

Leading the team are veterans Will Gallagher and Calvin Ralph. Both juniors, they have been playing in varsity matches since their freshman years. The loss of key players, including Gallagher’s older brother Jack, has left the door wide open for the two talented golfers to step up into their roles as leaders.

Rob Carcich, also a junior, has also earned his spot in the varsity rotation. Only seeing a few varsity matches last year, Carcich believes that this is not only his year to step up, but also the year for his teammates to really excel.

“We just have to be putting up good scores to win these matches,” Carcich said.

With three solid players, the team looks to senior Lee Angioletti to post the fourth score that will count for the team.

Ralph is optimistic about this year, as this is the year that counts for junior spring athletes that are looking to play in college

“We know we have the players and the opportunities to play with and beat some of the best teams in the county,” he said.

But the team looks like they are all on the same page, as Ralph almost repeated Carcich’s comment, saying, “We just have to put four good scores out every time we play.”

LAST WEEK: On Monday April 6, the Indians took on Westwood at Valley Brook Golf Course in River Vale. The Indians lost in a hard fought battle 167-171. Ralph paced the Indians with a 40, Carcich added 42, and Gallagher shot 43.

On Tuesday, the Indians took on league rival Old Tappan at River Vale Country Club, losing 180-185. Gallagher shot 43.

On Thursday, the Indians took on Cresskill at Alpine Country Club in Demerast. Ralph shot 43 and junior Tyler Farrell shot 47.

On Friday, the Indians were again at Valley Brook for a matchup with Paramus Catholic. Gallagher shot 40 and Ralph and Carcich shot 44

THIS WEEK: Monday, the team hosts Demarest at River Vale Country Club. And the team hosts another match at Rockleigh Golf Course against St. Joe’s of Montvale. And to round out the week, on Thursday, the team travels to Hackensack Country Club to face a very talented River Dell squad out of Oradell.
