PV forward Trent Shanley (98) fires off a shot against Scotch-Plains Fanwood. An assist by Shanley on Saturday gave him 100 points for his career.

When Trent Shanley arrived at Pascack Valley his sophomore year, he wasn’t expecting to have this much success.

“I was nervous when I first came here because it’s always a bit nerve-wracking playing for a new team,” he said. “Luckily I got to practice with the team in the summer, and that helped me get to know my teammates and the coaches better.”

Now, three years later, Shanley shook off the nerves and cemented himself as a premier scorer both at PV and in Bergen County.

The senior forward currently has a team-leading 40 points (29 goals, 11 assists) and reached 100 for his career during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Paramus. Those 40 points also rank second in the Big North Freedom Division.

It was an assist on linemate Austin Mattessich’s go-ahead goal that allowed Shanley to reach the milestone.

“Knowing I was playing with Trent [Shanley] this year meant I needed to get on a level where I could keep up with him,” Mattessich said. “For me, it was a great [achievement] to be a part of.”

Shanley also only needed three years to reach the 100 point plateau, a feat that often takes players four years.

But this was the first season when the prospect became real to him.

“It felt good, and I’m glad I was able to get it on senior night,” he said. “I noticed I was 38 points away before this season started, so that’s when it became a real possibility.”

Though the thought only entered Shanley’s mind this year, those around him weren’t surprised he reached the milestone.

“When I saw him on the ice for the first time sophomore year, I thought he had a good set of hands and good shot and that he could be something,” coach Ken DelSanto said. “So I’m not surprised he broke 100 points in three years.”
