This fall, the girls tennis team completed their season with a 6-10 record.

The team was led by senior Brianna Ruback. She finished the season with a personal overall record of 21-4, at her first singles position. In league matches, Ruback was 15-2.

In both the state and county tournaments, Ruback defeated her first opponent to move onto the next round, but then lost in the subsequent round.

One of Ruback’s major wins of the season came when PV faced Tenafly on September 16 in the team’s second league match. She defeated Tenafly’s first singles player, Sasha Shumyatsky. Shumyatsky entered this season as the defending county champion. After splitting the first two sets, Ruback finished Shumyatsky off in the third set, winning the match 7-5, 5-7, 10-5.

But Ruback said that when she looks back on her senior season, what she will remember the most is her teammates.

“As the season went on,” Ruback said, “we definitely got closer as a team.”

Fellow seniors, Noelle Garbaccio, Grace Cho, and Lauren Dentato were also key contributors on the varsity team this season. Katie Revie, Jillian Fein, Natalie Bade, Irene Ju, and Emily Smith will also be departing after this season.

“A lot of the team is comprised of seniors,” Ruback explained, “so it is sad that we will all be moving on.”

One of the most light-hearted and joyful moments the girls shared as a team this season was when they pulled a prank on their coach, Tom Gallione.

“During Pascack Period, we covered Gallione’s car in sticky notes,” Ruback explained with a smile.

Ruback’s mission is that this is not the end of her tennis career, she hopes to continue playing at the collegiate level.

Other underclassmen varsity contributors this season were Jess Ruback (Fr.), Elizabeth Parisi (So.), and Holly Aloi (So.). As of now, it is presumed that these three will be next year’s singles players.
