Farrell eyes return for playoffs

Pascack Valley started their domination of Passaic Valley early and often.

A 65 yard punt return by Jack Madden started it off and it was all over from there, as the Indians cruised past Passaic Valley 49-6.

The passing game for the Indians was top notch Indians once again as quarterback Colin Dedrick was able to hit main targets Jack Madden and Greg Collier early and often, which led to one touchdown, a 12-yard pass to Collier.

With an ankle injury to running back Jorge Cortes early in the game, Indian fans got to see a few players, including Andrew Flores, who carried the ball 12 times for 75 yards and a score. Coach Craig Nielsen complimented Flores along with others who stepped up in Cortes’s absence.

“They make us deep at tailback,” Nielsen said, adding that “(Cortes) is fine, he will play next week.”

Besides Flores, much of the second team got to play in the second half, which once again proved a bright future for the Indians (6-1). Matt Urrea and Josh Tillis punched in touchdowns.

Overall, fans saw what Nielsen described as a, “team effort,” and a game where “everyone contributed,” fans will now have to wait an extra day, instead of the usually Friday night matchup to see the Indians battle Ramapo for what will the Big North Independence division championship game.

Injury Update: Wide Receiver Steve Farrell returned to practice last week on a limited basis and Nielsen expects Farrell to be back at the latest for the playoffs.

Despite the injury, Jorge Cortes still leads the division in rushing yards. Cortes is very close to a 1,000 yard season at 823 rushing yards on the year.

Greg Collier is the division leader in sacks. On the season, Collier has 8.5 sacks.

Power Points Update: The Indians maintained their top spot in the  to the top spot in the North 1, Group 4 rankings. Rounding out the top four is Paramus, Roxbury, and Old Tappan, respectively. Roxbury (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season, a 36-28 verdict at the hands of Delbarton, and is now in a second-place tie with Paramus (6-1).

Power points are locked in after eight games, so a PV victory over Ramapo on Saturday would assure the Indians of securing the top seed in the playoffs.
