Nikki Glaser returned to host the 83rd Golden Globes this year after her success last year.
The choice to bring back Glaser likely stems from her success last year and Jo Koy’s failure the year before. Honestly, it’s a smart move to stick with what works, but I do wish they had chosen a new or more widely popular comedian like Marcello Hernández, who has been going viral recently for his work on SNL and a recent Netflix comedy special.
However, Glaser’s monologue was entertaining and enjoyable. Her jokes were witty, but I think her delivery and ruthlessness are what make her so successful.
Glaser started off the night with a joke about the Warner Brothers, pretending to auction them off, in mockery of the company’s sale: “So, let’s get down to business, shall we? We’ll start the bidding for Warner Brothers at $5. Do I hear $5?” said Glaser.
The joke was a good way to break the ice before going into her monologue, while also poking fun at the chaos that has come with the sale of Warner Bros.
Especially evident throughout her monologue, Glaser has a way of poking fun at celebrities while also cracking jokes that are funny and inoffensive, like with Kevin Hart.
“Kevin Hart is here. The Rock’s plus one half,” joked Glaser.
Glaser continued to poke fun at him later in the night when complimenting Ariana Grande’s singing abilities.
“Ariana, I would listen to you sing the phone book. Grab the one Kevin Hart’s sitting on tonight,” joked Glaser.
While I enjoyed the classic jokes, I especially admired Glaser’s ability to turn the age-old Leonardo DiCaprio girlfriend joke into something new and actually funny.
“The most impressive thing is that you were able to accomplish all of that before your girlfriend turned 30. I mean, it’s just insane,” joked Glaser to DiCaprio. “Leo, I’m sorry I made that joke. It’s cheap. You know what? I tried not to, but we don’t know anything else about you, man. Like, there’s nothing else. Open up, I’m serious.”
Glaser continued, “The most in-depth interview you’ve ever given was in Teen Beat magazine in 1991. Is your favorite food still pasta, pasta, and more pasta?”
The joke has gone viral since the night, as fans have been reposting the original interview on social media.
Glaser also poked fun at the movie “Wicked: For Good,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, calling it “Wicked: For Money.”
“I mean, it was so emotional. Two hours into that movie, I was just in tears like, I can’t believe there’s 45 minutes left,” joked Glaser.
Similar to last year’s monologue, Glaser teased Timothée Chalamet in a joke about his nomination for “Marty Supreme”.
“Timothée Chalamet is the first actor in history to have to put on muscle for a movie about ping pong. This is true. He gained over 60 ounces,” said Glaser.
Glaser also made some self-deprecating jokes, calling “The Pitt” star Noah Wyle “the only doctor I’ve seen regularly for the past 35 years.”
I think the incorporation of these types of jokes throughout the monologue was a good choice on Glaser’s part because they help the audience see that no one is safe from her roasts, not even herself.
She ended the monologue with a joke pointed at Steve Martin and Martin Short, who were nominated for “Only Murders in the Building”.
“Steve Martin and Martin Short, keep proving to us that in this industry, you are never ever too old to still need money,” said Glaser.
Glaser chose not to include the president or ICE in any of her jokes because, as she explained, she didn’t find the jokes funny and they felt too trivial to say— according to The Hollywood Reporter referencing her appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
However, this didn’t stop Glaser from roasting the whole crowd and the United States Department of Justice by referencing the infamous Epstein Files.
“I cannot believe the amount of star power we have in this room tonight. It’s insane,” said Glaser. “There are so many A-listers. And by A-listers, I do mean people who are on a list that has been heavily redacted. And the Golden Globe for best editing goes to the Justice Department.”
Glaser’s willingness to roast anyone is what sets her apart from other comedians. This joke was one of my favorites of the night because it didn’t feel censored and was a genuinely humorous take on a serious topic.
Although I did enjoy last year’s monologue more than this year’s monologue, it was still entertaining and funny. However, I do hope that next year’s ceremony will have a new comedian to give others a chance to shine.
